I notice that there is no way to contact support for this site, the "contact us" e-mail address "team@elmershack.net" is a non-existent e-mail account. Anyone know who's really running this site? It also appears that when you register, you lose all your "reputation" points. Despite using the same callsign, it apparently thinks you're a totally new user. Also, the FAQ says there are advantages to registering, but it doesn't list any. Does anyone know what these are? Also, have fun trying to get an OpenID account - they don't tell you that you not only have to type in your OpenID, but the whole website URL where you got the ID. Also, if you use your Google account, there is no way to limit what Google sends back, there's no information on Google anywhere about OpenID or how to control what they hand out. Why not just register people by callsign or name on this site? Also, when you ask a question, it requires you to enter something called "Tags". There's nothing in the FAQ about what a tag is. Make sure you hit the Tags button to learn what they are, or you risk losing everything you typed by looking after you've written your question. Some things that have to be fixed before this site becomes really user friendly. -Dan, KW2T |

Dan, Thanks for the questions. I screwed up the email address in the footer and it is now fixed. Please let me know if you have trouble sending email to team@elmershack.com. If you have an idea on the unregistered account and the current accout you are using then I can merge them so that you get the reputation points on your registered account. The primary advantage to registering is that you can build up reputation and other people that use the site can tell at a glance, from your reputation, both how much you use htis site and how much other people like what you ask and answer. Regarding open id. I know that it can be kind of a pain. The easiest open id provider to use I've found is the myopenid provider. If you use the google open id provider all that is sent back is an access token that says that google has authenticated you. We don't get any account information from google at all. If you want to understand openid and how it works - I recommend starting here. The main advantage to you as a user is that you don't need to remember yet another username/password combination to login to the website. You authenticate yourself with a service that you already trust. There may in the future be a regular login provided, but for right now it is only open id. Regarding tags, they are optional - I don't believe you have to enter anything. However, it is a way to classify questions according to which topic(s) they contain. So when you see tag - think topic and you won't be misled. Also if there are topics you want to follow you can get an RSS feed of just those tags... One more note on tags - questions about the site are welcome too. Please use the 'about-elmershack' tag when asking them. Thanks again for using this site and I hope that you continue to use it despite the difficulty with the open id. I'll try to track down the user(s) that have the same callsign on them and get them merged. |

I use my yahoo OpenID to get in. There are many places to get an OpenID... I'd say start at www.openid.net as they can answer more questions about why that is used. I am rather a big fan of using it as opposed to a whole independent registration setup. |
