Would it be a bad idea to use the radio I am operating as the base for the 144 MHz/440 MHz antenna I'm transmitting on?

Thanks for the answers, I am hoping to never have to do this, but was wondering what the consequences would be if I did. I figure that packing a roll of aluminum foil for use in a pinch might be a better idea. Not sure how well aluminum foil works, but it seemed to do the trick when paired with my ht.

I ran that way for a while with a mag mount - but found that it didn't give a very good ground plane since the radio wasn't big enough. I moved the antenna to the middle of my metal filing cabinet and got better results.

I usually use a 18 inch cookie sheet, but was wondering if it would be acceptable in a pinch. Thanks

the higher and more metal you have the better for what you have. be it a car or what ever. I know what your going through. inside i ran off a pizza pan and a two meter ant mag mount and got hits from 30 miles away off repsts. i did that with a qurter wave ant. it coust me fifteen dollars.N4TZB thanks for you question.

Not a good idea for several reasons. The two answers above have called attention to the ground plane's size. Keep in mind that a quarter wave at 2 meters is roughly 19 inches. That would make for a 38 inch pizza pan. REALLY family size. A refrigerator may be a bit closer to optimum.

Another problem COULD, but not necessarily will be, is RF getting into the radio on transmit. That can really screw things up. With the antenna on top of the radio the RF field is really strong. Handhelds are built for that - mobiles and bases maybe not.

I doubt the magnetic field from the antenna will help the radio either. Magnetic mount antennas are made to stick to a car at highway speed; they're not refrigerator magnets.

But they are so good at holding up report cards, shopping lists, and crappy drawings of a family made at school! :-)
