when tunig for max. noise, peaking the grid and plate where does the dip come into play is this done by reading the s-meter for peak why would you then dip im a newbie i have a swan 500 cx im trying to tune |

Jim, I am assuming that you have the 'Operation and Maintenance Manual for the Swan 500-CX'. As you have stated in your question, the instructions for 'Operation' on page 10 paragraph c,number 3, states to "Carefully adjust the PA GRID and the PA PLATE controls for maximum "RECEIVER" noise. NOTE: The PA GRID control resonates the "TRANSMITTER DRIVER STAGES" and the "RECEIVER RF AMPLIFIER PLATE CIRCUIT". The PA PLATE and PA LOAD controls adjust the input and output capacitors in the "TRANSMITTER POWER AMPLIFIER FINAL PLATE CIRCUIT", as well as the "RECEIVER RF AMPLIFIER GRID CIRCUIT". Proper adjustment of these controls in the "RECEIVER POSITION" will result in approximately resonant conditions in the "TRANSMITTER" stages. So the tuning for maximum noise is done in RECEIVE and the "dip" is a part of the "TRANSMITTER" tuning located on page 10. Paragraph 2 states, PA PLATE resonance may be accomplished by (1) tuning for the "dip" in PA cathode current, or (2) tuning for maximum transmitter output, depending on which circuit is being metered. You are reading the PA cathode current on the meter when in Press-To-Talk (PTT), TRANS., or CW mode, so PA PLATE must always be tuned for the "dip" of the PA cathode current on the meter when in any of these modes. I recommend that you practice tuning in short time spans such as 5 seconds or less until you are more comfortable. Larry K4RFE |
