According to this chart (and I've seen it other places), YF is an abbreviation for wife in ham radio. I've heard XYL being used quite a bit, but never YF. Is YF really used to abbreviate wife?

I haven't come across YF in the past. It makes more sense than XYL, and also reads as "wife". In addition, it doesn't imply that a woman suddenly gets older when married, as with XYL.

James, I've been using CW for the past 46 years in Amateur Radio and was taught by my Mentor that you use "XYL" ("Ex-Young Lady") as the abbreviation for your or someone elses Wife. You use "YL" ("Young Lady") when refering to an unmarried female regardless of age.

The following URL's show "YL" as "Young Lady" as I know it:

I'm not a YL but an OM but we have what is called a "YL Net" in our club. They are either XYL's or YL's. I think unless you are speaking about a specific person that you know is married, saying YL is more appropriate. It's like addressing something to Ms xxxxx vs Mrs xxxxx unless you are completely sure they are married. Call it being politically correct.

no longer a (young lady) she now is my XYL( ex-young lady) more
time for radios, dogs, experimenting and more $$$$$ left-I never
used that term YL much, only if I were talking to a Young Lady-
or in the YL Net-But just YL is a unmarried women reguardless
