Hi, I have had a Yeasou mobile and a J pole antenna for years as my base station.

I don't talk on it very much, and haven't done so for a little while. Now I am not able to get out. When I key up I simply just recycle back to the frequency number. I'm out of practice, and it's been a while since i studied these things. Can anyone give me some troubleshooting tips?

I've been thinking for a while I might need to get up on the roof and shine up the copper j-pole. Could this be my problem?

Jim,

Not sure what you mean by, "When I key up I simply just recycle back to the frequency number." If by that you mean when you press the "key" (mic button?) the radio goes dark and when you release the "key" (mic button?) it comes back up to the channel readout, then it sounds more like a power supply problem - not enough curent available to transmit so the voltage goes low enough to turn the radio off. Check your power supply for peoper operation, your wiring for tight connections or your deep-cycle battery for a full charge depending on your power source.

Your copper J-pole will not be affected by the layer of discoloration that forms on it so long as the coating does not interfere with the feed line or ground connections.

If these suggestions don't fix your problem, write again with more information regarding your setup, radio model, exact symptoms, voltage readings and so on.
