Just curious what people in the real world have been able to do on UHF/VHF. So tell me about the farthest QSO you've had on 2m or above (simplex only - no repeaters, satellite or moon bounce). What mode, modulation, power, equipment etc. was used?

I don't normally operate VHF other then FM to repeaters. When I operate VHF it is usually with my local radio club during the June & Sept VHF contests where we put up towers and have amps. My club wasn't going to operate last June because of the weather forecast so I put up a temporary 2m beam on a portable mast and used that. The conditions in the June VHF contest were supposedly unbelievable so what you hear about anything during that weekend might not be typical. My longest was an easy 1279 mile SSB contact from northern NJ to eastern TX. For 6m I can tune my G5RV wire antenna and I made some contacts on that as well including New Mexico. The G5RV is obviously not optimal but it worked. You can see my writeup from the weekend at http://www.k2dsl.com/2010/06/13/june-arrl-vhf-contest-with-pictures/ K2DSL - David 1

I've worked 180 miles on 2 meter FM using a Cushcraft A14810S 10 element yagi. Wish I had a multiband rig for 2 meters, but unfortunately a Yaseu FT-1000MP Mark V doesn't have anything but HF. |

I've worked tampico Mexico from shiner tx , as well as Tallahassee Florida all on a simple copper pipe center fed collinear at 45 watts FM THAT'S roughly approx 775 to 500 miles! Man what a band opening though |
