I know anyone with an amateur extra license class can get a 2X2, 1X2, or a 2X1 call sign.

Are the 1X2 and 2X1 call signs vanity or are they systematically issued call signs?

For full details, see the FCC's callsign systems page. In a nutshell, the 2x1 and 1x2 callsigns (Class A, amateur extra) can be sequentially assigned, but unless you live in regions 11, 12, or 13 (Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, etc.), these have all been used. I'm not sure if there are any 2x2 callsigns (also class A) available in the sequentially assigned pool.

FYI, once a callsign is assigned as a vanity call, it is never returned to the sequentially assigned pool.

2x1, 1x2 and 2x2 call signs can be systematically issued but it has been decades since 1x2 (non-vanity) call signs have been routinely issued by the FCC. My call (W5YI) is NOT a Vanity call sign. There are some 2x1 call signs (and plenty of 2x2) call signs available under the Vanity Call Sign System. But 1x2 calls are difficult to come by. You need an Extra Class license to get a 1x2, 2x1 or 2x2 call sign beginning with the prefix AA through AK. Fred - W5YI

You can check out the web pages at AE7Q's site for some additional info. Since you're in the 6 call area, this link will show the next sequentially assigned call signs (or close to it) if you wanted to request one:

http://www.ae7q.com/list/GenLicAvail.php?REGION=6

When I posted this, the next 2x2 call that would be assigned would be AF6TZ (AF6TY was the last assigned) or KR6GA (KR6FZ was the last assigned). The reason there are 2 depends on the Group which is defined at http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?id=amateur&job=call_signs_1 . Group A is Extra and Group B is Advanced.

I checked Alaska which is Call Area 11 and the next sequential Extra call would be AL3P. See http://www.ae7q.com/list/GenLicAvail.php?REGION=11 . Puerto Rico would be WP3Z. Other then America Somoa and the Mariana Islands, which have 2x1 calls, you'd be assigned a 2x2 call in other call areas including Hawaii.

I was responding to the other responses. I think they're right about the sequentials being done; watch the stats and predictions at ae7q for current activity. Maybe there are some sequentials in some regions, but certainly not here in region 4.
